Residency and Entry
Requirements for Italy

As an EU citizen you will not require a visa to live and work in Italy; however British nationals must take out a residence certificate (Certificato di residenza) within three months of arrival.
Before leaving the UK:
Ensure you have a full UK/ EU passport, British Nationals are free to enter Italy for up to three months to look for work or set up in business, however you may be required to prove that you have adequate means for the duration of your stay and for your return journey.
Once you arrive in Italy:
You will need to visit the Anagrafe within three months of arrival to obtain a residence certificate which is required to do things such as buy a car and open a bank account. The Certificato di residenza (residence certificate) can be obtained by providing proof of employment or financial resources which can be in the form of bank statements, tax returns or a contract.

The residence certificate is issued by the Anagrafe office of the local Town Hall and is a confirmation that you are living where you claim to. A local police officer (Vigili) will visit you in person at your new home and once your details have been confirmed will issue a certificate within a few days. If a decision cannot be made immediately they may defer for up to six months from the date that your application was made.

Non- EU Citizens
If you are not an EU citizen you must apply for the 'stay permit' (Permesso di Soggiorno) after 90 days. An application can be made at the local Municipal office.
