Before leaving the UK you should obtain an EHIC - European Health Insurance Card from the Post Office which will entitle you to free or low cost medical treatment when visiting Italy for a limited period of time. However it is worth considering private medical insurance for more substantial cover.

Once you arrive in Italy you are entitled to be visited by a medico convenzionato on presentation of your EHIC, for a small sum and emergency care free of charge at a first aid centre (Pronto soccorso).
